John Basilone

John Basilone was a U.S. Marine Corps Machine gunner best known for his heroic actions during the Battle of Guadalcanal. Born in 1916, Basilone became a national hero after single-handedly holding off a Japanese attack in 1942, allowing his unit to maintain its position. His bravery earned him the Medal of Honor. Later, Basilone returned to combat in the Philippines, where he was killed in action during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. He remains a symbol of Marine courage and sacrifice.
